At this time, Grandview Therapy and Consulting is offering an Interpersonal Process therapy group for individuals who identify as male.

Grandview’s Approach to Group Therapy with Men

Dr. Neale has an interest in how both thoughts and feelings surrounding sexuality and gender roles play a significant part in how one interacts with the world. Specifically, how men sometimes feel limited by a variety of interpersonal and societal pressures including, but certainly not limited to, “traditional” masculine ideals. As a result of these limitations, some men experience difficulty in expressing their thoughts and feelings in a constructive way. In many instances these men pursue therapy to help them better understand themselves.

Grandview believes the majority of work in therapy involves examining what is happening in the moment, the “here and now” within one’s mind and also between other individuals with whom we interact. Usually this “other” person is a trained therapist. However, it has been Dr. Neale’s experience that much value is also gained from not only interacting with a therapist but with other peers as well. It is this reason why group therapy is so powerful. Not only are we examining our own thoughts and feelings within ourselves, but we also have the opportunity to experience interactions with other group members to better help us examine our interpersonal challenges/difficulties.

This group may offer assistance in the following life domains: healthier ways to express and manage emotions, connect with your own needs, desires, hurts, and strengths, practice new ways of relating, communicating, and resolving conflict, learn to ask for and give support and constructive feedback, explore strengths and struggles in relating to others, reduce feelings of isolation by sharing common experiences with other men in a safe, respectful, non-shaming setting.

How do I join? Call Grandview to set up an initial phone consultation (there is no charge for this consultation). If we both agree that group would be a good fit for you, you will be invited to schedule a one-time 60 minute group preparation session. During this visit we will help you establish your goals for group. Every group participant will take part in an individual group prep session.

How does group work? It has been Dr. Neale’s experience with prior therapy groups that it takes time to get used to the flow of how group works. Participants often ask “How long will I be in group?” This is a challenging yet understandable question. The best answer we can give future group participants is to consider committing to an initial investment of at least several months to see how you acclimate to group. You are certainly encouraged to bring up how you feel about group at any time throughout your group experience. Group dates are TBD.
